Flowers and where flowers grow are the wonders I choose to paint. Painting flowers is my way of telling stories. And flowers are wonderful storytellers.

Flowers share quiet stories, joyful stories, and even wild and woolly stories. We gather them during our saddest times and our happiest of times. Sometimes they simply sit in a glass jar on our table or surprise us as they flourish in a crack in the sidewalk. The way sunlight finds a way through a flowering dogwood and lights a blue forget-me-knot is so special.

When I paint someone's home and create its own special floral border, I think of the people and plants that live there. Gardening with my grandchildren is the best, and I love when we ask each other what our favorite plant is. Impossible! So we pick our favorite for that moment. And painting flowers is a way to savor those moments.

My job titles have included artist, landscape designer, and children's librarian. My grandmothers taught me about their flowers. My mother taught me the gift of simply being present with flowers.  As a mother, my sons and I took wildflower walks. It makes sense to me why I love gardening so much.

I think of my garden as one of my best friends. I like to think we take care of each other.
